It’s been a busy spring and summer so far at Grand Chapel Studios. The second series of Infuse: INSESSION at Grand Chapel Studios has been released with a total 20 videos from 10 artists including Tut Tut Child, Natasha North, Tides, Alex Bay, Indi and the Vegas, Tom Dibb, The Ages, The Kingston Inn, Alex Fox and Ben White. The line-up for the next series is looking great already, but you’ll have to wait until October to find out more.
Recording projects recently have included EPs for Mandeville & Tom Dibb, and projects with M a r i n e, Jazz Morley, Kribbar, Jess Thriston, Abi Murray, Sonic Scream & Harry Phillips… and there are always new toys, best of which is a late 1950s EMT 140 Plate Reverb – and this one has some serious heritage.. A beautiful sound, make sure you ask us about it when you pop in!
Summer is going well, so make sure you keep up with us on Facebook and Twitter.
After the huge success of Theo Jackson’s gig, we’re also hosting a second evening of live music, this time with Tom Dibb who is preparing for his #APickleDownUnder tour. Tom is planning to drive his 1989 T25 VW Camper Van all the way from here in the UK through Europe and Asia to Melbourne, gigging all of the way and ending in a big show in Oz. It’s Free Entry to the event, with very limited places, and donations to the artist are welcome.
You can find out more on our Live page here and we will be adding links to more websites soon. It’ll also be the first chance to hear his new EP.. soon to be available from TomDibb.com .
On the 28th of March we'll be welcoming Theo Jackson, newly signed to US label Dot Time Records, to start his Door to Door Troubadour Tour with a private gig at the Chapel. The event is free, but it is ticketed due to limited numbers. If you'd be interested in joining us, please email us to apply for a ticket at email@example.com
We're also very happy to be welcoming back up and coming band M a r i n e who are recording their 3rd EP here this Spring. You can read a review of them playing live on Behind The Scene, and listen and buy their first EP, recorded at Grand Chapel Studios and Mixed, Mastered and Produced by Graeme Hales, on BandCamp
Finally, there are some new additions at the Chapel - we have a new Isolation Booth and floating gallery being built, due for completion in mid-March, so watch this space for some lovely new pics!
The Summer has been so busy…we’ve had to dedicate the diary to building work for some weeks… but we have still managed to keep recordings going. Check out Nadine’s latest from the chapel later this summer…
In july our studio ‘boss’ Anneliese judged at 3Music Hertfordshire Young Artists of the Year Awards, hosted at the Weston Auditorium at the University of Hertfordshire. The panel included Producers, Radio Presenters and Record Industry. Our head sound engineer Mikey over saw everything to do with sound backstage. The event was just bursting with talent and the final winner, Jessica Dowding, not only blew the judges away but also won a free recording at the Chapel.
Come September it’s recording as usual, every day of the week for the foreseeable future, with many interesting projects in the pipeline. If you want to get in touch with us, please have a look at our Contacts Page.
Next week (24th March 2014) sees the launch of the latest Live Music videos filmed here at the Chapel by the University of Hertfordshire, with support from sE Electronics. They feature sessions from Raxstar & Dream Warriors, Nadine, Mandeville, Cardinal Jack, Stolen Horse, James Delarre & Saul Rose, the Aylwin String Quartet, Jacket, Tread & Marine.
They are all so fabulous…we can’t wait to show you! Watch this space and our Live Sessions page from next Monday.
Grand Chapel's 22ft high Live Room is bright, expansive and acoustically unique and has been designed with inspiration, comfort and the creation of music at its heart. Newly renovated, the Chapel is a Grade II listed building built in 1842. Now back at the centre of the community, it hosts seasonal events for the village and we make sure we take full advantage of its beautiful, natural acoustics. It is a tranquil, airy and relaxing place, be it daytime with sunlight streaming through the huge windows, or at night when your choice of lighting can bring a different mood.
Present Day Facilities
The Main Room is enabled for 48 Channel Recording, and we have a collection of both vintage and modern microphones available for use. We have a 6ft 2", 1929 Chappell Grand Piano alongside a Danemann Upright Piano, and other in-house instruments include a Vintage Premier Drum Kit, an early Dulcitone, Acoustic, Electric and Bass Guitars and a variety of Percussion instruments. If you're not after the lovely reverb of the main room, you can use our Esmono Isolation Booth which is perfect for isolating Amplifiers, Solo Vocals or a standard drum kit.
The Control Room is a comfortable, acoustically treated work space which reflects and channels the spacious atmosphere of the Live Room. We currently have a 32 Channel Desk, AD/DA is provided by a Solid State Logic MADI AX Interface, there are modern SSL and vintage Akai/Roberts Preamps and we have a variety of outboard gear from Lexicon, Yamaha, Focusrite and others. Monitoring is via Quested H208s, KRK Sub and AKG LSM50s
To be completed in 2015. Situated under the apex of the Chapel Roof, with views overlooking the fields to the east, this room provides a tranquil, out of the way place for dry recordings or as a mix/edit suite. If you've had a full day's recording and need a quiet place to listen through to the day's work and continue creating, this is the perfect environment. The room is equipped with a 16 channel desk, and includes a Roland JX-3P, Yamaha DX7, Korg Triton Pro, Roland VK7, a Waldorf Pulse and outboard from Lexicon and Yamaha. Monitoring is via Quested H108s.
The Chapel has a newly installed kitchen which is available to use during breaks in sessions. We also have on-site shower facilities and an extravagant roll-top bath available on request (if your session is that wash-worthy!). Please contact us for details about accommodation.
Grand Chapel Studios is a unique private recording and filming environment, situated in Central Bedfordshire, 35 miles outside London and close to the M1 corridor. If you would like to visit, or just come in for a chat about a project, please feel free to contact us.
RECORDING Originally built with flattering acoustics in mind, we like to think that the possibilities here are almost endless. Our hardwood floors and 22ft High Live Room give the Grand Chapel a beautiful ambience with reverberance up to 2 seconds. Isolation can be achieved using either our 2×2 Esmondo Isolation Booth or our custom built Amp Isolation Chamber.
GEAR Please contact us for our complete gear list. A few details… we’re especially proud of our EMT 160 Plate Reverb, Edward. Our Studio Monitoring is via Quest H-208s, Yamaha NS-10Ms and AKG LSM50s with other Quested, Yamaha and Genelec monitors in Studio 2, our edit suite.
